Three Scholarships Help Women Pay for their Culinary Educations

Oddly enough, though women do the majority of the cooking in American homes, women who want to cook professionally confront a wall of bias. No wonder, then, that women chefs who've paid their dues generously help young women who want to enter their profession. These three associations of women food service professionals could help you finance your culinary education.

Les Dames d'Escoffier

"Les Dames d'Escoffier is a leadership culinary organization composed of women who have not only achieved success in their profession, but who contribute significantly to their communities," said the late Julia Child, chef extraordinaire and proud LDEI member. Les Dames has chapters in many major cities, so a bit of networking wouldn't hurt. The organization awards geographically specific scholarships to help women get culinary training. Visit their website (ldei.org) to get the latest news about the LDEI culinary school scholarship competition.

Women Chefs and Restaurateurs

The mission of Women Chefs & Restaurateurs (WCR) is the education and advancement of women in the restaurant industry. Since WCR was founded in 1993, the association has offered unique scholarship and internship opportunities to its members. Though the Association provides a limited number of grants and scholarships, you'll never know whether you're the one they'll support unless you apply: Women Chefs and Restaurateurs, 110 Sutter Street, #210, San Francisco, CA, 94104.

Roundtable for Women in Food Service

The RWF is a national organization of foodservice professionals devoted to providing opportunities to women pursuing a culinary education. The organization's mission is to enhance the visibility of women in the culinary profession. Best of all, once you're a working chef, RWF will provide you with mentoring and networking opportunities. For information about RWF's culinary school scholarships, write to: Roundtable for Women in Foodservice, 3022 W. Eastwood Avenue, Chicago, Illinois 60625.
